I'm gonna need this for a while for what I'm about to say...

So I saw a black i8 in a parking space and on the road yesterday evening for the first time(it may even be the only one in Michigan right now, for all I know), and if I'm honest, I didn't like it very much; the whole design/concept. I just don't.

I like small parts of it though. Nah, I only liked the taillights. It's just too "concepty" to me; it's like a BMW trying to be a Lambo, and it's too outlandish. Maybe that's the point, I don't know, it's just not that interesting to me; I'm not fascinated by it at all. it doesn't entice me to want to take pictures of it; if I saw one at a car show, it wouldn't beckon me to come take pictures of it, it's just "meh".

It's ok, you're amidst family. I'm not a big fan of the 911 and after owning an NB and NC Miata, I'm only sort of "meh" on it.

I like wagons though. Oh and the i8. :)

I come at this car from the other direction - a couple things I dislike (read deck, hood scoop) but overall I think the design works well. A Porsche 911 works in a different, but it looks pretty much all the other recent 911s. Laziest design studio in the world (Clarkson).

First off, like what you like. I'm one of those weirdo's who actually likes my Aveo. It's a ton of fun off-road. But I will say that I have finally found a BMW that I do like in I8. I've never been a huge fan of BMW (and never have liked MB either) but I do like the I8.

Not going to flame you, but I like the i8xdriveiS. I think & hope it's a step towards BMW finding its way back as an engineering company that builds cars, not a marketing company on wheels.

I'm also as much a Porsche fanboy as you are, and I think they need to have something this innovative downmarket from the 918. Ruf built that electric 911, and I hope Porsche follows suit somehow.

It's polarizing, for sure. I happen to be on the love it side of things. I agree that the design is very concept car and I think that was some of the point. They are presenting their idea of the future of cars (materials, drive train, and efficient performance) and the design enforces that. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and I respect that. No flaming here!

the concepty bits actually really work for me. I'm personally tired of seeing concept cars with all these great ideas, crazy styling, etc... Then as production gets closer everything becomes diluted and "production friendly" - all the charm the concept had is brought down to the bare minimum to pass as a new model.

Is it in true BMW styling? Maybe not but they stayed true to the concept. Plus it's their top tier nutso car so they can be crazy with it. Audi has the r8, Ford the GT, dodge the Viper and so forth.

I specifically said, "not flaming." :) And I certainly don't want them to ditch the flat-6, but they could complement it with electric drive. Think about it: Porsche could build a lighter & more responsive Carrera 4 & Turbo if they didn't have to put a differential & driveline up front. Use an electric motor & small batteries or supercaps to power it for front wheel traction when needed. Or they could use it for torque-fill on 2wd cars. Way of the future, man.

Because then there'd be no point in having a Carrera S or GTS. Have you forgotten that 911s are already expensive? So yes, I'd like to pay $100k for a base Carrera instead of $82k, $115k for a Carrera S instead of $98k, and god forbid, I'd love to get a GTS for the price of a damn Turbo.

I'd like to have the option to not pay $100k+ for a brand new 911 still around; everyone will just go and by Caymans if that happens.

No. I still want this to happen. They'd still be expensive. But they'd at least be a bit more reasonable. And people would still buy the C2S and GTS.

Here is my idea for the GTS - give it a (very slightly) detuned version of the engine from the GT3. So that way people with small children can have a bat shit crazy 911 with 4 seats

I didn't explain myself well. I don't mean it's too slow to have fun in (I have a 997.2 C2). I just think they are wayyyyy overpriced for how much power you get.

I got my car when it had 12,000 miles on it. So I got a bit of a break off the price of it new but still paid a ton. I feel like a sucker for spending that much.

Yes. Much like Infinitis were, overpriced when new yet resale value sucks so you can get a used one for very few $$.

Also, I nearly forgot Infinitis still existed. Doug is right.
